Sellers Beware: UNFORTUNATELY, internet Scammers are always working online classifieds sites, and HancockHorses.com is no exception... so, be careful out there. For more info, or if you have received any suspicious emails in response to your classified ad posted on HancockHorses.com, scroll to the bottom of the classifieds page, and read about SCAM emails here. Protect yourself. If you have any doubt, forward any suspicious email to me, and I will be glad to help you figure out if it's for real or not.

Sellers BEWARE of SCAM EMAILS: I have had a number of sellers express concern over SCAM email inquiries in response to their classified ads. PLEASE BEWARE of scammers. Sooner or later ALL internet classified sites get discovered & become prey to these people that have nothing better to do with their time than to try to rip you off. Scammers send bogus email to you, to solicit a phony sale involving (counterfeit) money orders or certified bank checks. You can recognize scam email because the sender has little or no knowledge of the item (in our case a horse) which is the biggest giveaway, as they send emails in bulk and have little knowledge of the ad they are supposedly responding to. If the scammer asks questions in the email that are already answered in the ad, that is your first clue. The next clues are: Scammers are often not from North America (you can check their I.P. address - peek under the hood of the email) - or - you can tell that English is not their native language. They often appeal to your greed and offer you a larger sum than you ask. I recognize their emails so easily, (I have seen so many of them) I sometimes forget that folks new to the internet are vulnerable simple because they are not savvy yet. And - regrettably, scammers improve their technique over time, too. So if you run across an email inquiry that is suspect, ask them an obvious question to test them - if you are still unsure, forward it to me, and I will help you figure out if it is genuine or bogus. Here is a typical example of a scam email sent to one of our HancockHorses.com sellers, starting w/ the ad they responded to:

      For Sale: Great Grand-daughter of Buck Hancock. Rebel’s Irish Lady, AQHA #2755610 is a 1988 own daughter of Iron Rebel. She has been ridden and shown in 4-H and open shows by my son when he was 10. A good riding mare that has been used as a brood mare for the last two years. We are expecting a baby any day! Here is an opportunity for you to own a very nice mare and breed her the way you want. Possible 3-way available. I also have for sale a nice feminine yearling solid paint filly out of this mare and a big muscled palomino yearling gelding ½ brother to the filly. Both are located in Lincoln, NE. 3.The Recent Pics ?.  (sometimes already in the ad) If I have doubts, I will ask them if they meant the mare or filly... or something about the color - something a genuine horse buyer would know, and the scammer won't know.

I will be looking forward to have all this details from you as soon as possible,so that we can proceed further. they love to be in a hurry, it is usually "time sensitive" offer, to encourage you to go after the $ rather than think or question them

There are scambaiters who play with these scammers ad nauseum, just to see how long they can lure them on, and to what lengths they can pursuade them to go along with. Here is one funny example.

My friend has a 3 yr old hancock gelding. He is 12-13 hands tall. He is halter broke, has been trailered, trimmed, bathed, loves attention and doesn't have a mean bone in his body. He was shown by a 10yr old girl for 4-H. At their first show they placed 5th. The show was the first one for him and the first one for her. She had no prior horse experience and they got along great. He is not saddle broke. I am trying to find a good home for him. I don't want to take him to a sale and risk him going to a kill buyer. If you have any suggestions please let me know.
